October 8, 2010: Metropolises and "their" Alps, in Munich
The Alpine Arc destiny is closely linked to the adjacent agglomerations and cities. Under the motto of "Metropolises and 'their' Alps" and in the context of the current EU-wide discussion of macro-regions and spatial policy, the 2010 ForumAlpinum explorde the relationship between the Alps and large cities along the Alpine Arc from scientific and political angles.

This meeting has permited to widen the debate and to present the basis of a common macro region strategy for the Alps. Academics as well as representatives from the Alpine Convention, the European Union as well as from the adjacent metropolises (such as Munich, where the meeting took place) and from mountain regions participated.
The Secretary General of AEM participated to the round table "Cooperation between Alpine regions and adjacent metropolises: first steps toward a macro-regional strategy?" where he did a presentation.
In order to go past the protection of mountain territories and to favour a true sustainable development (of the quality of leaving, of the access to services and to natural resources), it is mandatory to promote the Alpine economy which is competitive and innovative. Metropolises have a vital need of mountain's natural resources. This need should be favoured by compensations.
In order to obtain plus value from both types of territories, numerous projects show that there is a need to create strong networks between the urban and the rural and to consider the solidarity issues that are related.
Project realized within the framework of the Alpine Space Program deserve more support, in order to favour a better coordination of public policies. The link between Metropolies and the Alps should therefore be reinforced to reach a balanced territorial development.
